LABIAPLASTY OF THE OUTER LIPS OF THE VAGINA: ENLARGEMENT OF THE LABIA MAJORA

The enlargement of the genital labia majora is a frequent request in plastic and cosmetic surgery consultations. The goal is to treat the labia majora, which has lost volume after weight loss or with age.

Anatomical reminder:

The labia majora is rounded and clearly visible on each side of the vulva, and is covered by thin skin that promotes the evaporation of water. It contains sweat and sebum glands that allow natural lubrication of the skin. it is covered with hair on the outside, while their interior is hairless.

The skin pigmentation is more pronounced on the exterior, while the inside is pink and smooth. It is common and completely normal for women to vary in the size and shape of their labia majora.

How to increase the labia majora?

The augmentation of the labia majora is carried out by injecting fat (lipofilling) or hyaluronic acid.

In the case of lipofilling, it is necessary to carry out a small liposuction under local anesthesia and then reinject the fat into the outer lips. There is always a partial loss of the injected fat when injected, so this will be corrected immediately or during the touch up session 3 months later.

For hyaluronic acid, the technique is simple and is carried out the clinic under local anesthesia. One to two syringes are injected per side (DESIRIAL® PLUS), which will last on average 12 months.

This intervention is often coupled with the reduction of the labia minora. By doing this, it is possible to correct the small hypertrophy of the labia minora or perfect the aesthetic appearance of the female intimate area during a labiaplasty.

Fat injection (lipofilling)

Lipofilling increases the volume without adding foreign bodies. This involves reinjecting the fat taken from the patient’s body under local anesthesia, in a discrete region and in small quantities (knees, abdomen, hips, mons pubis).

The results are immediate and can last for several months to years if a constant weight is maintained. After a phase of edema and redness of two to five days, the result is natural and the fat brings a superior quality to the skin texture compared to hyaluronic acid.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Another solution is to inject hyaluronic acid in the labia majora, which is also used to fill facial wrinkles. The advantage of increasing the labia majora is mixed because, in addition to aesthetic remodeling, it helps provide a natural padding that protects the entrance to the vagina and limits local irritation.

The amount injected is generally lower than the lipofilling, usually between 2 to 4ml per side because the product is more hydrophilic (attracts 1000 times its weight in water) and it is more volumizing than fat.

Filling with hyaluronic acid gives more flexibility to the skin tissue, however the results tend to disappear after 12 months on average because the product is absorbable.
